Refrigeration Condensing Unit FAQs
What is a refrigeration condensing unit?
A refrigeration condensing unit is a key component of a refrigeration system. They are commonly used in commercial refrigeration, such as in walk-in coolers, freezers, and air conditioning systems. It consists of several essential parts, including a compressorcondenser, fan, and controls that regulate the unit’s operation to ensure efficient performance. Condensing units can be air-cooled or water-cooled, depending on how they expel heat.

How does a condensing unit for a refrigeration system work?
A condensing unit plays a crucial role in a refrigeration system by transforming refrigerant gas into a liquid to enable the cooling process.
First, the compressor within the unit pressurises the refrigerant gas, increasing its temperature and pressure significantly. Once compressed, the heated refrigerant gas travels to the condenser coil.  As the refrigerant passes through the coil, heat is removed, usually with the help of a fan that blows air across the coil (in air-cooled units) or water flowing through the system (in water-cooled units). As the refrigerant loses heat, it changes from a high-pressure gas to a high-pressure liquid. This liquid refrigerant is now ready to move to the next phase of the refrigeration cycle, where it expands and evaporates, absorbing heat and cooling the desired space. The entire process is carefully managed by control systems that regulate the pressure, temperature, and flow of the refrigerant.
